About Augusta, Georgia

Augusta. The name alone brings visions of exquisite golf greens and stunning landscapes, and recalls the most recognized names in golf in the world. Golf is the world in this habitat for swinging the clubs on lavish green fairways. Augusta takes great pride in hosting each spring the Masters golf tournament, the sport's most prestigious event.

Of great social note, the Southern Baptists formed their denomination here, and Morehouse College began in the basement of the Springfield Baptist Church. Important in church is song and one master of song -- popular song -- was born here. That would be James Brown. The city’s motto currently is “We Feel Good.” That’s a positive sentiment in a town that has seen a lot of important civil-rights action.

Nowadays, Augusta is a town whose government consolidated with the county government. Various sports are popular here. Ice hockey and indoor football are played in the James Brown Arena. But, on top is golf. What can you say, but to join the party?

Jessye Norman, the opera singer, is from Augusta. So was Butterfly McQueen. Woodrow Wilson was a resident, too, along with Jasper Johns, the artist, and Hulk Hogan, the “acclaimed” television star.
